Affordable Family Photographers

What is the best way to find a good maternity photographer?

Typically, pregnancy portraits are taken between 28 and 32 weeks, so there is not much room for error if you are not satisfied with the results. You will be able to get it right the first time if you follow these tips;

  • Get started as soon as possible: Consider your options at the end of your first trimester so you have time to research and compare different photographers, ask questions, and address concerns. How much does it cost? What is included in the package? Do you feel relaxed with this photographer? Will she be doing the editing? “
  • Contact a specialist: Visit the photographer’s website to learn more about her experience and areas of expertise. A variety of examples from maternity sessions is a good indication of her ability
  • Style is important: Consider what you would like your photographs to look like before you hire a photographer. Are you looking for something artistic and moody, or something simple and realistic? Would you prefer to be photographed in a more formal setting with a simple backdrop, or would you prefer to be photographed in an interesting environment? Ask her whether she uses film or digital (or both). Film photographs have a soft, organic look that lends a nostalgic feel, whereas digital photographs have a sharper quality, vibrant colors, and an overall crispness.
  • Referrals should be checked: If you have not been personally referred by someone who has used the photographer and has a positive recommendation, ask them for several referrals to contact.
  • Consider the long term in your selection: Would this photographer be able to take newborn portraits as well? The fact that you are going to spend time screening a photographer, and presumably establishing a level of trust, makes sense to find someone you will be able to use again in the future.
  • Don’t discount the possibility of DIY: It is still important to visually document your pregnancy even if you cannot afford maternity photos or do not have the time to schedule a session. It will be a mistake if you do not have a few photos to look back on once the baby is born. Get your partner, a friend, or a family member who is good with a camera to help you stage a makeshift photo shoot. Take photos during the golden hour (the hour or so right before or right after the sun goes down or rises), when the light will be ideal for capturing warm, glowing portraits.
